How to put in (and then take out) your contact lenses
We know. This whole finger in the eye business might sound a bit daunting. But don't worry – it's all very simple. From putting in your contacts to taking them out, we're here to help you along the way.
Putting in your contacts
So you've got your first pair of contacts at hand. Now what?
Step 1
Wash your hands properly with warm water and soap and then dry them well with a towel. Make sure there is no fluffy residue on your hands afterwards.
Step 2
Remove the right contact lens from its packaging and place it carefully on your right index finger. You'll know it's placed correctly when the contact lens creates a rounded shape. Its edges should be facing up. If they're turning to the sides, your contact lens is inside out.
Step 3
Pull your lower lid down with your middle finger and use your left index finger to pull up your upper lid. It may be hard not to blink at first, but it's important that you keep your eye wide open.
Step 4
Stare straight ahead into the mirror and direct the contact lens into the middle of your eye. The lens should attach easily with a pleasant, fresh feeling. If clean and inserted correctly, your contact lenses should feel comfortable as if they're not even there.
Step 5
Repeat with your left eye.
Removing your contacts
Congrats, you just wore contacts for the first time. Now it's time to take them out.
Step 1
Again, wash your hands properly with warm water and soap and then dry them well with a non-fluffy towel.
Step 2
Make sure the contact lens is still in your eye. You'll know by the faint outline around your iris.
Step 3
Use a finger of your non-dominant hand to gently pull down your lower lid (it should be touching your lower lashes). Look straight ahead into the mirror, then use your dominant index finger to pull the contact lens down.
Step 4
Use your index finger and thumb to carefully pinch the contact lens. It should detach from your eye easily (don't worry if it takes a few tries at first).
Step 5
If it's a daily lens, please dispose of it into the bin. If it's biweekly or monthly, place it in a clean contact lens container that's been filled with fresh solution.
