For Yousef Gnaoui, every day starts with wanting to be inspired and to make things that are as beautiful as possible. “To the absolute max of my ability”, as he puts it himself. It’s the people around him that inspire him – his partner and son, for instance – but also the current state of the world. “In everything I create, I simply try to listen to what the world is telling me.” That is why his recent musical output focuses on the political climate as well as empathy and self-reflection. Heavy topics, but in Yousef’s case they go together with danceable beats.
There is a lot of analysis in his songs – he is picking at the world order, as well as his own brain. “I am curious about how things work. I want to know how they are put together. Moreover, I want to take them apart and put them back together myself. I want to know how people work. How humanity works. How I work.” Yousef wants to inspire others to look around them more as well. Focusing more on ‘us’ instead of ‘me’. Although sometimes he could use a bit more me-time. “Rest and quiet are important. I really need to remind myself of that."
